1Accepting these Terms
By downloading, installing or using the ResidentStep app (“ResidentStep” or “the app”) or this website, you agree to these Terms of Service (“Terms”) and to our Privacy Policy. If you don’t agree, don’t use ResidentStep. The app asks you to Accept them when you set it up.
ResidentStep is operated by D&B Evergreen Adventures LLC (“we”, “our” or “us”), a company registered in the State of Washington, USA.
ResidentStep is not a law firm and is not affiliated with USCIS or the U.S. government. It is not endorsed by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security or any government agency. We are an independent company.
2What ResidentStep does
- Keeps a private record of your trips, documents, dates and life events on your phone
- Counts your trips against the lines for keeping a green card and for citizenship, and shows return-by dates
- Reminds you of deadlines, such as card renewal, the I-751 window for 2-year cards, the 10-day address rule and passport expiry
- Works out dates from the dates you enter, such as a receipt extension and the earliest date to file Form N-400
- Helps you build your N-400 history, and gives you an offline border card, emergency contacts, a travel packet and a lost-card guide
- Shows dated rule updates with their status and source
- Backs up your records, encrypted, if you choose to turn on backup
What it doesn’t do. ResidentStep never chooses, fills in or files forms for you, never tells you whether you’re eligible for anything, and never predicts the outcome of an application, a trip or an interview.
ResidentStep is free to download and use. The free version shows one non-personalized Google AdMob banner on the Home, Trips and Citizenship screens. We block ads for lawyers and immigration services, but we don’t choose individual ads or endorse what they advertise.
3Not a law firm, no legal advice
ResidentStep is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. It is not a substitute for the advice of an attorney. We are not attorneys, and nothing in ResidentStep creates an attorney-client relationship. Wherever a date or a trip comes close to a line that matters, the app points you to an immigration attorney, and you should talk to one, or to a representative accredited by the U.S. Department of Justice, before you decide anything about your status, a trip or an application. Be careful with any ad that offers immigration services.
4Your dates, the rules and their sources
ResidentStep computes from the dates you enter and shows the rule it used and that rule’s source. A result is only as right as your entries: check them against your card, your passport stamps and your notices.
Each rule carries the date it was last checked against its source. Rules, fees and policies change, sometimes quickly and sometimes in court. We work to keep ResidentStep current through its rule updates, but we can’t guarantee that every rule is up to date on the day you use it. USCIS’s and CBP’s own pages and the notices you receive are the official word, and how a rule applies to you is decided by the government, not by the app. A date the app shows is a date from your entries, never a decision.
6Who can use ResidentStep
You must be at least 13 years old to use ResidentStep. If you’re under 18, or under the age of majority where you live, you need permission from a parent or legal guardian, who agrees to these Terms for you. A parent may keep a family profile for a child on the parent’s own phone.
7Your records and backups
Your records are saved on your phone, encrypted. They’re yours: export them or delete them at any time in Settings. Without a backup or an export, they’re gone when you delete the app or lose your phone, and a phone backup restored to another phone can’t open them. Turn on ResidentStep’s backup, or export your data, to keep a copy. We aren’t responsible for lost records.
Photos of your documents are for your reference only: always carry the documents themselves.
8At the border
Border officers can search phones. You decide what to store in ResidentStep. The app is not a way to hide information, and you agree not to use it to mislead any official.
The border card, the travel packet and the lost-card guide are information to help you, not legal advice and not a promise of how an officer or agency will act.
9What you agree not to do
- Use ResidentStep for any illegal purpose, or to give false information to any government agency
- Copy, resell or redistribute ResidentStep or its content
- Reverse engineer or tamper with the app, except where the law allows it
- Overload our servers, or reach them other than through the app or this website
- Present ResidentStep as an official USCIS or government service, or as legal advice
10No warranties
ResidentStep is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement, to the fullest extent the law allows. We don’t guarantee that it will work without interruptions or errors, that its dates and rules are complete or current, or that it suits your situation.
11Limitation of liability
We are not responsible for the outcome of any trip, application, interview or decision about your status, or for decisions you make based on ResidentStep. To the maximum extent the law allows, our total liability to you for all claims will not exceed the greater of $50 USD or the amount you paid for Premium, and we won’t be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages. Some places don’t allow these limits, so they may not all apply to you.
12Other services and app stores
ResidentStep uses services from Apple, Google (including Firebase and AdMob), Cloudflare and Expo, each under its own terms, and links to outside websites such as uscis.gov, which we don’t control.
These Terms are between you and D&B Evergreen Adventures LLC, not Apple or Google. You must also follow the terms of the store you got ResidentStep from, including Apple’s Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement where it applies. We, not Apple, are responsible for ResidentStep, its support and any claims about it, and Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms.
13Intellectual property
ResidentStep, including its name, logo, design, code and text (but not the government’s forms and rules it refers to), belongs to D&B Evergreen Adventures LLC. We give you a limited, personal, non-transferable license to use ResidentStep on devices you own or control.
14Legal versions and changes
These are version 1 of the Terms. We update ResidentStep to fix problems, add features and keep its rules current. When we change these Terms, the new version gets a new number, an effective date and a plain-language summary of what changed, and ResidentStep asks you to Accept it in the app before it applies to you. Your acceptance is saved on your phone only.
15Ending your use
You can stop using ResidentStep at any time: delete your data in Settings, delete your backup if you have one, and uninstall the app. We may suspend or end your access to the backup if you break these Terms or the law requires it. If we stop offering ResidentStep, we’ll tell you in the app first, so you can export your records.
16Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of the United States and the State of Washington. Before filing a claim, you agree to contact us at legal@residentstep.app and try to resolve it informally. Disputes we can’t resolve that way go to binding individual arbitration under the American Arbitration Association’s rules, except small claims, and not as part of a class action.
If you live in the European Economic Area (which includes the European Union), the United Kingdom or Switzerland and use ResidentStep as a consumer, the arbitration and class-action terms above don’t apply to you: you can bring a claim in the courts where you live, and nothing in these Terms limits the consumer rights your local law gives you and that can’t be waived. We’d still ask you to contact us first, but you don’t have to before going to court. Refunds, and any right to withdraw from a digital purchase, go through the store you bought from (section 5).
